Practice for tight hips

Hi!

I have very tight hips and seek lateral opening. When I’m sitting cross legged my legs create a 45’ angle with the floor.

I researched the website and tried a couple of classes but they either focused on sagittal opening (where I’m quite flexible) or didn’t feel effective.

At the same time, I’m looking for hip openers that don’t put pressure on the knees.

Can I find such class on the website?

Thanks!

Great questions! Hips are tricky due to the wide variety of ways that our skeletons are set up in regards to this ball and socket joint. As you pointed out you do have mobility in one direction but find limitations in others. This is likely due to how your femoral head is set in your hip socket, and the angel at which your hip socket is pointed.

Because of this you might not ever gain much more mobility in those planes, but we always want to try to work with our connective tissue first to see how much room we can get. If you need less pressure on your knees I would suggest doing some of the hip openers you would normally see in a class while on your back instead. Gravity and pressure are taken out of the equation and you can let sensation guide you more.

Hi Fiji! Thank you so much for your reply.

Could you please suggest what postures/sequences to try on my back, or even better, classes I can find on the website for lateral hips flexibility? (I am a subscriber)

Thanks!

figure 4 or pigeon pose on your back would really be idea, also reclined cobbler pose or tree pose on your back. You can also use props under your knees so that your legs are not straining in these poses and the tissue can soften and release.
