Well today I achieved 75 orbits around the sun. Thirteen years ago I began my yoga journey. I started with a video workout series and one dvd was a yoga workout. After completing the series I didn’t want to stop the yoga. I with trepidation joined a yoga studio in Manhattan NYC near my apartment. This studio was full of young professionals. Dancers, choreographers, actors, and other artsy type people. It was small only fitting maybe 15-20 people in a session. I’ll never forget that first class. In I walked at age 62 into this den of youthful energy. Fortunately I had learned well from my video classes and I seemed to know what I was doing which surprised teacher and students alike. There was a real community feel to the place and there were students from all over the world which made it even more ,well, exotic. The teachers were excellent and soon I was doing headstands & forearm stands and lots of other new stuff. I have to admit it was invigorating for a 62 year old to be learning more about yoga and being in that youthful environment. The experience changed my outlook on life. I suppose I’m sharing this to encourage others to try new things no matter your age. New worlds can open up.
A very happy birthday to you!
Keep on practicing!
That’s a grand thing to read! Congrats to you!!
That’s awesome Jim!!! I’m not far behind you at 64, motion is indeed lotion!
Indeed. I have lots of friends my age and lots younger who cannot move. Back problems, hip problems, all sorts of problems. I’ve tried to share my yoga journey but to no avail. Seven years ago I had a full knee replacement and was back on the mat in 5 weeks. Even that did not provoke interest. So I have stuck to encouraging more open minds.
Jim, Happy Birthday and thank you for such an amazing gift! Your reflection is so valuable and encouraging! Hold the door to your heart and mind open, even when the rest of the world thinks you should not. That invites growth and evolution!
Happy belated birthday, Jim! Thank you for sharing your story with us. So inspiring. And wishing you many more healthy and happy years with yoga.
Some of the most wonderful messages have been posted on the DYWM site - I remember one from years ago, where a woman who was 80 wrote that she could do four chaturangas in a row but needed to sometimes slow down in a Fiji class. And Fiji wrote back that she wished she would also be as energetic and capable when she turns 80. Sending gratitude for such a wonderful community here. Anna
